In the men's singles, World No. 50 Justin Hoh marked his return with an upset victory over Indonesia's fifth seed Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah in an intense three-game contest.

Lee Zii Jia also made a winning start after rallying from a game down to beat Chinese Taipei's Liao Jhuo-Fu (22-24, 21-12, 21-15), extending his head-to-head record to 3-0.

World No. 80 Eogene Ewe continued the winning momentum by stunning India's World No. 74 Saneeth Dayanand Shimoga in another hard-fought three-game battle (21-4, 19-21, 21-12).

Malaysia's sole women's singles representative, Goh Jin Wei, however, suffered an early exit after falling to Canada's Wen Yu Zhang despite pushing the second game to the limit (17-21, 20-22).

The men's doubles produced mixed results, with Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong falling to Korea's Jin Yong-Lee Jong Min in straight games (12-21, 14-21).

Seventh seeds Tee Kai Wun-Yap Roy King were also eliminated in a closely contested three-game encounter against Korea's Na Sung Seung-Wang Chan (21-18, 19-21, 17-21).

It was only their second tournament as a newly formed pair following their opening-round exit at the China Open last week.

Another setback followed as Man Wei Chong-Soh Wooi Yik bowed out to Japan's Haruki Kawabe-Kenta Matsukawa (9-21, 22-20, 14-21), while Arif Junaidi-Kang Khai Xing also fell to Indonesia's Ali Faathir Rayhan-Devin Artha Wahyudi (17-21, 22-24) despite a spirited performance.

The only Malaysian men's doubles pair to progress, Aaron Chia-Aaron Tai, secured their first victory as a partnership after battling past home favourites Wu Guan Xun-Wu Hsuan Yi in three games (18-21, 21-9, 21-14).

In the mixed doubles, Lee Yi Bo-Lim Chiew Sien bowed out to Chinese Taipei's Wu Guan Xun-Lee Chia Hsin (18-21, 17-21), while Low Han Chen-Chan Wen Tse pulled off an upset over home fifth seeds Liu Kuang Heng-Hsu Yin Hui (15-21, 21-13, 21-18).

Top seeds Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah opened their campaign with a 21-15, 21-17 victory over Japan's Mao Hatasue-Kanano Muroya.

Pearly and Thinaah are competing as the tournament's top seeds for the first time since the Indonesia Masters in January.

The young pair of Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan also progressed in style after defeating home favourites Lin Xiao Min-Peng Yu Wei in straight games (21-17, 21-10).

However, seventh seeds Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting suffered a narrow defeat to Thailand's Hathaithip Mijad-Napapakorn Tungkasatan (19-21, 17-21).
