World No. 43 Wong Ling Ching secured her place in the semi-finals after a hard-fought victory over India’s Isharani Baruah in Nimibutr Stadium, Thailand today.
Ling Ching forced a deciding game to win 18-21 21-16 21-13 in a match lasting 64 minutes.
Goh Jin Wei won a battle between compatriots after overcoming K Letshanaa 12-21 21-17 21-19 in 55 mintues.
The day was marred by an injury setback for Lee Zii Jia, whose comeback journey was prematurely halted during his match with Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan.
Zii Jia secured the first game 21-10, but the momentum shifted in the second set as Farhan leveled the match at 21-15.
However the contest ended in 39 minutes when Zii Jia was forced to retire due to an injury during a rally at 15-17 in the second game.
In men’s doubles, Chia Wei Jie-Lwi Sheng Hao faced a daunting challenge against Indonesia’s World No. 16 Leo Rally Carnando-Bagas Maulana, losing 11-21, 16-21 in 29 minutes.
Meanwhile, the veteran pairing of Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong also saw their journey end at the hands of China’s rising stars, Hu Ke Yuan-Lin Xiang Yi.
Azriyn-Wee Kiong struggled to break down the Chinese defense in their first-ever meeting, eventually falling 21-13, 21-14 in 36 minutes.
